The Venus Flytrap is probably the most popular of all carnivorous plants. There is only one species, naturally found in one small area of North Carolina. There are many different forms of the plant available now, from all red to all green and with different shaped teeth!
The standard plant will be a small rosette of green traps with a reddish centre -the colour bought out by the sun, but it will vary. In the summer the traps tend to be carried higher to catch flying insects. They are prolific flowerers and we cut the flowers off as they put so much energy into them.
As the plant grows over the years it will divide to form a clump which can be left as a large plant or split up.
They love full sun and want to stand in water for most of the time -more in summer than winter when they will stop growing.
For water, try and use rainwater or distilled water. If you live in a hard water area avoid the tap water except in an emergency (boil it first). Filtered water is also OK.
If you do wish to feed them, live food is best. When the prey touches the trigger hair inside the trpa the trap snaps shut, but it is the wriggling afterwards that causes the trap to slowly close and seal, then digest the prey. This second stage wont happen with a Big Mac or a dead fly!
