Trumpet Pitchers or Sarracenia are some of the most impressive carnivorous plants. They are excellent at catching flies, bluebottles and wasps.
They come from North America - Florida, Mississippi, Georgia -right up the Alaska and Canada.
They love the sun, as much as possible and like most carnivorous plants, are bog plants and want to stand in water (rainwater). They will drink a lot in summer.
They are ideal for a sunny window or conservatory, especially one that isnt heated in winter as they do like to stop growing and many will tolerate a hard frost. This winter period is important to their growth over the years. They are a hardy perennial and will die back over winter.
You can also grow them outside all year if you select the right species or variety.
Most people grow them for the very sculptural traps and the flycatching ability, but the flowers are stunning too, much sought after by flower arrangers.
Over the summer the traps will fill up with flies, attracted by the nectar and the veining. As the summer goes on the traps may start to get 'indigestion' where they have caught the flies, but this is perfectly natural and nothing to worry about. They can suffer from greenfly so keep and eye on the new growth in ealy spring.
On the whole though, they are easy to keep, just requiring water - no need to feed.
The come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours and generally speaking, the bigger the trap, the more flies they will catch.
All our plants are sent potted.
